The Prime Minister has committed to stopping small boat crossings and I support the Government in achieving this. I believe in strong borders, and the UK has the right to control who comes in and who does not.
Since I was elected, I have voted for stronger immigration controls and new laws that make clear that if you come here illegally, you won't get to stay in the UK. I have also met with Home Office Ministers and continually lobbied the Government to stop the use of hotels to accommodate asylum seekers. I am pleased that Burton is in the first tranche of hotels to stop being used for this purpose, and all asylum seekers will be removed by the end of January.
We are making progress, but we must go further. The Government has now published its draft emergency legislation to tackle these illegal boat crossings and ensure that illegal migrants are removed to Rwanda rather than letting them stay here. I am keen to gather constituents' views so I can hold the Government to account as your MP.
