Burton and Uttoxeter’s MP, Kate Griffiths, has called on the Chancellor to consider future support ahead of the next Budget for the hospitality and pubs sector as a result of the ongoing impact of the Coronavirus pandemic.
In the Commons earlier this week, Kate highlighted how important pubs and hospitality are to Burton and Uttoxeter’s local economy. The local MP urged Rishi Sunak to keep future possible support in review to ensure their long-term survival and growth as the country looks to recover from the coronavirus pandemic.
The Chancellor in his response said that he could not comment on future budgets but gave assurances to Burton’s MP that he would keep future possible support under review. Mr Sunak added that ‘hospitality is such an important sector for our local communities and indeed our national economy’ and he would do all he can to ensure they ‘drive our recovery’.
The exchange in the House of Commons comes after the Government announced up to a further £9,000 for businesses properties in the hospitality and retail industry to help the sector through the difficult period the country is currently facing.
Kate said: “Burton and Uttoxeter’s economy, and thousands of jobs, rely on a strong and thriving hospitality and pubs sector.”
“I know businesses are grateful for the safety net the Government are providing but as we begin to look at how we can grow our economy and recover from the pandemic, I am pleased Rishi Sunak took on board what I said.”
“I will continue to press Treasury colleagues ahead of the next Budget to ensure pubs and hospitality play a key role in the UK’s economic recovery.”
The next Budget is set for Wednesday 3rd March 2021.
