Burton and Uttoxeter’s, MP Kate Griffiths, has joined forces with 44 other MPs in the Conservative Environment Network (CEN) Parliamentary Caucus to condemn the latest round of protests undertaken by Extinction Rebellion activists.
Events seen last weekend included newsrooms being targeted by the group to prohibit the distribution of newspapers, actions the Prime Minister and the Home Secretary branded as an ‘attack on the free press’ and an unacceptable attempt to limit the public’s access to news. Kate, as part of CEN, condemned the same tactics deployed by the group whilst making clear it is vital to tackle climate change and nature loss but this must be done constructively and by working together.
Today, the same group of MPs, including Burton and Uttoxeter’s MP, have released a video to correct the record on what a Conservative Government is doing to deliver on the target of net zero emissions by 2050, a target enshrined in law by Government last year.
Kate said, “People might think with all the noise and stunts from Extinction Rebellion that the Government is not acting on climate change. That could not be further from the truth. The UK is amongst the best of the G20 economies for its record on tackling climate change.”
“We know that there is more to do to reach the 2050 goal but it is important that everyone is brought with us. That is why the Government has doubled climate finance for developing countries, brought forward the phase-out date for new petrol and diesel cars, and increased funding for home insulation. However, it is only by working together will we be able to build back a greener and more sustainable economy.”
