Burton’s MP, Kate Griffiths, is seizing the window of opportunity to secure a third Trent river crossing for the town following the Government’s announcement of a new £900m Getting Building Fund.
The Government has selected over 300 projects which will receive a share of the £900m funding and one of those chosen is a new development site in South Derbyshire which will see a mixture of new homes being built and employment opportunities being created.
Included in the project’s £7m allocation is funding which will be unlocked as a direct result of the development to begin preparatory work on a new Trent river crossing at Drakelow. If it goes ahead, a third river crossing along with a bypass scheme to the A38 would have a significant easing on Burton’s existing roads which at rush hour are at capacity creating long queues of traffic and waiting times.
Kate said: “A third river crossing is something Burton residents have long been calling for, and our roads desperately need. Locals will know the current reality of Burton’s roads, which at peak times can feel like a standstill. A third bridge would make the world of difference to Burton, not just in journey times and traffic levels but also in noise and air pollution too.”
“I pay tribute to the work carried out over the years by Heather Wheeler MP, along with the local authority teams involved. This Government funding is a really encouraging news and an opportunity I will not miss. Although there is a lot of work to be done, and several hurdles to overcome, I will be working with colleagues both locally and in Government to make this ready-made solution happen.”
