Local Member of Parliament, Kate Kniveton, has welcomed the news that Burton Library is to undergo a £1.3million refurb to enhance the facilities available to residents. Staffordshire County Council, who own and operate the library, announced they a package of improvements to upgrade the public building and improve the services it offers to visitors.
Back in March 2023, Burton Library was awarded £265,000 from the Government’s Libraries Improvement Fund. This funding will now be utilised to help with the funding of the improvements, with Staffordshire County Council investing the remainder.
This investment will go directly into improving the children’s area facing the Washlands, a sensory area, and creating a modernised area for all residents to enjoy reading and studying. Improvements will also include refurbished toilets and a new ceiling.
The local MP has praised the announcement from the County Council and highlighted the significant investment and wider regeneration work being undertaken in Burton town centre with the Towns Fund to enhance the Washlands and the recent funding for Meadowside Leisure Centre too.
Commenting, Kate Kniveton MP said:
“It is great news that Burton’s Library is to undergo a significant refurbishment programme. I applaud Staffordshire County Council taking the opportunity to build on the success of securing funding from the Government’s Libraries Improvement Fund, to deliver a much bigger package of upgrades and improvements to services and facilities for residents.
“With the Towns Fund enhancing the Washlands and the money announced recently for Meadowside Leisure Centre too, the funding for the Library is another piece of fantastic news for Burton and will help to revitalise our town centre.”
