Kate Kniveton MP has today (15th November 2023) met with the Chancellor of the Exchequer, the Rt. Hon Jeremy Hunt MP, following the Burton and Uttoxeter MP’s contribution to the King’s Speech debate on Economic Growth.
The King’s Speech marked the beginning a new Parliamentary session last week, where the Government announced legislation focusing on the right long-term decisions that will safeguard the future prosperity of our country. The Government is taking the right long-term action to deliver change and a brighter future for everyone in the United Kingdom, whilst continuing to halve inflation, increase growth and reduce debt.
Ms Kniveton took part in one of the succeeding topical debates on the King’s Speech, focusing on Economic Growth, highlighting her role as Project Champion for the A50/A500 North Midlands Manufacturing Corridor. Since being elected, the Burton and Uttoxeter MP has worked alongside Midlands Connect and Staffordshire County Council to campaign for vital upgrades to this key piece of nation infrastructure, which were successfully secure in October.
During the debate, the local MP highlighted the benefits this road upgrade is estimated to bring to Burton and Uttoxeter, and the wider region, generating £12 billion for the economy and creating 17,000 new jobs by 2030.
Following the contribution, the Chancellor invited Ms Kniveton and other parliamentary colleagues to meet with him to discuss priorities ahead of the Autumn Statement, which is taking place on Wednesday 22nd November. The local MP has been working to ensure the Chancellor is fully aware of what residents’ priorities are for the Government as he puts his economic statement together. The meeting also came shortly after newly released figures showed that the Government has met its target to halve inflation by the end of the year.
Following the meeting, Kate Kniveton MP said:
“I was pleased to meet with the Chancellor today alongside parliamentary colleagues ahead of the Autumn Statement next Wednesday. Over the last few weeks, I have been working to ensure the Chancellor is fully aware of the priorities for residents in Burton and Uttoxeter as he puts his economic statement together.
“Today’s news on inflation is incredibly welcome but there is of course still more to do, building on the work that the Government has already done to support those most affected by cost-of-living concerns. The Autumn Statement is an important fiscal event and I want to thank the Chancellor again for his time today and listening to what I and colleagues had to say.”
