Burton and Uttoxeter Member of Parliament, Kate Kniveton, has today (11/05/2023) visited St. Augustine's CE Academy in Draycott in the Clay, to meet with pupils and hear about their project work following Hedgehog Awareness Week.
Hedgehog Awareness Week (30th April – 6th May), organised by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society, aims to highlight the plight of British hedgehogs and what can be done to help the native species. Invited by the Academy’s Key Stage 2 Class Teacher and English Subject Lead, Ms Olivia Cashmore, Ms Kniveton met with pupils to talk hedgehogs and to update the children on what the Government is doing to protect the species.
The local MP highlighted the Government’s new multi-million pound Species Survival Fund to protect the UK’s rarest species by creating habitats and supporting farmers to improve population abundance. Ms Kniveton also mentioned the benefits of introducing ecological infrastructure such as hedgehog highways to help the species travel safely and improve biodiversity.
