Following a meeting with Cllr Julia Jessel on Branston Bridge, Kate Kniveton MP said:
"Today I held a meeting with Branston’s County Councillor, Julia Jessel, for an update on Branston Bridge.
"Network Rail has made an application to Staffordshire County Council to formally close the level crossing at Warren Lane in Branston on safety grounds.
"If this is approved, Branston bridge will be improved for pedestrian and cyclist use, and the formal extinguishment will not take place until these improvements have been implemented.
"The County Council will carry out informal consultation with local residents shortly, which will provide further details on the improvements to the pedestrian and cycling routes over the bridge.
"I will continue to work closely with Cllr Jessel and the local community to ensure a practical and optimal solution is found for local residents who make use of this crossing on a daily basis."
