Kate Kniveton, Member of Parliament for Burton and Uttoxeter, was invited to The Mosley Academy in Anslow to meet with pupils from the school’s Parliament.
The group of children aged 5-11 are selected from across the primary school to serve on the school Parliament, meeting weekly to talk about the Academy and what pupils would like to see improved at the school.
The school Parliament gives pupils the chance to learn about democracy and voting, with the opportunity for all children to vote for their class representatives as well as a School Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister. The young school parliamentarians have also been previously asked to interview new members of staff and represent the Academy at Anslow’s Remembrance Service.
Members of the School Parliament were keen to ask questions of the Burton MP to find out what it is like representing the local area in Westminster and what a typical day in Parliament looks like. Ms Kniveton also met with Mrs Sarah Rowe, the Academy’s Headteacher, and Miss Fryer, who coordinates the school Parliament, to speak about the term ahead and inviting the school’s Parliament to visit the Palace of Westminster.

“Ensuring pupils engage and understand the value and importance of democracy is paramount. School parliaments or councils can play a vital role in this, and I congratulate Mosley Academy for having such a thriving and inquisitive group of young parliamentarians.
