Burton’s Member of Parliament, Kate Kniveton, has met with the top representatives from the Canal & River Trust to discuss the improvement works to the Trent and Mersey Canal that runs through the town.
Meeting in Shobnall on Friday (15th October), the local MP was joined by the Chief Executive of the Canal & River Trust, Richard Parry, and his colleague, James Dennison, Enterprise Manager for the West Midlands.
The three discussed the planned improvements to the towpaths and projects designed to increase the connectivity of the waterways between Stretton and Branston.
The canal, which is now over 200 years old, is a popular route for local walkers, runners and cyclists and these improvements are intended to enhance the route for local residents and make it safer too.
Commenting, Kate Kniveton MP said:
“I want to thank Richard and James from the Canal and River Trust for meeting with me and outlining the improvements their organisation is making to our local waterway network.
“For many in Burton, the canal is an idyllic place where they can go for a quiet walk or run, away from the disruption of traffic and street noise.
This investment will enhance the section of the canal between Stretton and Branson and make it an even more attractive place for residents to make use of.”
