Last week marked the 40th anniversary of the liberation of the Falkland Islands back in 1982. The conflict saw 255 members of the British Armed Forces killed, and hundreds more injured, in successful efforts to recapture the Falklands which ensured the freedom of the island communities. The British Task Force and the personnel who took part in that conflict will always be remembered for the bravery they showed and the service they gave which resulted in our Armed Forces’ victory.
This coming Saturday (25th June) is Armed Forces Day, and is part of the wider Armed Forces Week, taking place from 20th – 26th June. The theme this year is ‘Salute Our Forces’ and is an important opportunity to pay tribute to the armed servicemen and women who have taken part in active duty to keep us safe at home and others around the world.
Today, as we see devastating scenes of the Ukraine invasion we are reminded of the selflessness of individual men and women who step up to serve and put themselves in harms way to stand up for their country, a way of life, and their loved ones. Although no British personnel are actively serving in eastern Europe, our Armed Forces can be proud of the key role they played in training the Ukrainian Army in the preceding years.
The UK Government is supporting our veterans and is committed to making sure that this country is the best place to be a veteran anywhere in the world. Almost six months ago the Government launched its Veterans Strategy Action Plan which included 60 commitments to support those who have served in the Armed Forces. Backed by £70m of funding, the Strategy is already delivering for veterans including the new ‘Great Place to Work for Veterans scheme’ which makes it easier for veterans to join the Civil Service and the development of a new Veterans ID.
This Saturday, please show your support for our veterans, the service they give to protecting our country and #SaluteOurForces!
