Burton and Uttoxeter Member of Parliament, Kate Kniveton, has today (07/12/23) joined her constituent, Laura Cooper, to submit a petition to Staffordshire’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner (PFCC), Ben Adams, following a number of tragic road fatalities on the B5030.
The local MP and Ms Cooper submitted the petition with nearly 2,500 signatures calling for additional speed cameras on the B5030 between Uttoxeter and Rocester. As PFCC, Mr Adams is Chair of Staffordshire Safer Roads Partnership, which brings together the Police constabulary, Staffordshire County Council and other agencies to tackle dangerous driving across the county.
The petition is calling for the instillation of an average speed check camera system with the aim of reducing speeding and dangerous driving. Studies have shown that average speed check cameras can effectively reduce both cases of speeding and collision incidents (Source: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2018).
The petition will now be considered by Staffordshire Safer Roads Partnership with a formal response expected.
Commenting, Kate Kniveton MP said:
“I am pleased to be with Laura Cooper today to support her submitting the petition for speed cameras along the B5030 between Uttoxeter and Rocester. The number of incidents, and in some cases tragic fatalities, is alarming and it is for this reason that Staffordshire Safer Roads Partnership should consider further measures to prevent future incidents on this stretch of road.
“Laura’s petition has received almost 2,500 signatures and these concerns must be taken seriously by the local highways authority and Staffordshire Police. Myself and Staffordshire’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, Ben Adams, will continue to work together to tackle dangerous driving on our county’s roads.”
