What do you think about when you think about Staffordshire? Oatcakes, cheese, ceramics, beer or even marmite? Our great county produces some of the finest British products and produce enjoyed not just here at home but right around the world.
This Sunday (1st May) is Staffordshire Day, our county day to celebrate all that’s good with our local area and to highlight our proud heritage and even our future! It is our opportunity to tell others, and even remind ourselves, what our county brings to the table and the country’s economy.
The date, May 1st, was originally chosen as it is the anniversary of when Josiah Wedgwood set up his pottery company in 1759, revolutionising Stoke and Staffordshire into the hub of the world’s ceramics industry.
Earlier this week, a group of local business owners, potters, brewers and farmers travelled down to Westminster to showcase to MPs and Lords the brilliance of Staffordshire and for them to learn about the importance of tourism in our area. It was great to be able to welcome Staffordshire Wildlife Trust and Molson Coors from Burton as part of the local delegation and to see them getting recognition from national leaders.
This year’s Staffordshire Day theme is ‘The Great Outdoors’ and if you are looking for something to do this weekend, there are a whole range of events taking place from guided walks in the Moorlands, special open days at Tamworth Castle to a race day at our very own Uttoxeter Racecourse!
