Kate writes a bi-weekly column for the Uttoxeter Echo. This column was originally featured in the 25th May print edition.
Over the last few weeks I have met with a number of people in Uttoxeter who through one way or another play an important role in serving their community. From baristas brewing coffee, environmentalists cleaning up our green spaces to even dentists extracting teeth, they all give a service to our community that make it a more attractive and healthy place to live.
A community is made by those who serve it and we are so fortunate in this area to have so many people who care about improving it for all. It is a rewarding part of my role as the Member of Parliament, getting to meet these individuals and voluntary groups, particularly when their service has been recognised and they are receiving an award or even a Queen’s honour.
Next week we will celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom, the Realms and the Commonwealth. This will be our opportunity to come together as a community and a country to pay tribute to the Queen and her service to this nation.
The bumper 4-day bank holiday weekend will see many fantastic events and activities between 2nd – 5th June to celebrate this incredible milestone. In Uttoxeter, the big attraction is the event at the Racecourse which will be a great family day out with craft stalls, food outlets and a fun fair with lots of entertainment. There are also many non-ticketed events including Garden Parties in many of the surrounding villages which are hotly billed to be a feast of victoria sponges and cucumber sandwiches.
To help you plan your weekend, I have put together a list on my website of all the events I know taking place in our area. You can find this by visiting www.kategriffiths.org.uk/HMPlatinumWeekend.
