Burton MP, Kate Kniveton, visited Outwoods Primary School on Thursday 13th July 2023 to speak to year 6 students and to answer their questions about what the Government is doing to ensure Britain recycles more and is encouraging people to make more sustainable choices.
Ms Kniveton spoke about her role as the local Member of Parliament for Burton and Uttoxeter as well as how the Government is introducing changes to the law to ensure the UK is more environmentally friendly. The MP highlighted to pupils measures such as the ban on microbeads, restricting the supply of plastic straws as well as introducing tighter rules around plastic packaging.
The local MP learnt from the Outwoods pupils what steps their own school had taken to ensure that students were better educated and living more sustainably. Some of these measures include the Recycling Rangers who are a group of pupils looking into plastic pollution, holding a ‘good as new’ toy sale which encourages reusing old toys and taking part in lessons on the environment too.
Kate Kniveton’s visit was led by Mrs Maria Ashworth who leads the school’s environmental programmes.
Commenting, Kate Kniveton MP said:
“I was delighted to visit Outwoods Primary School and meet with Recycling Ranger pupils to discuss the importance of doing everything we can to recycle more.
“I want to thank Mrs Ashworth for the invite and to the Year 6 pupils for informing me of the incredible actions they are taking to improve the school’s sustainability efforts. From visiting schools across the Burton and Uttoxeter constituency I know how seriously local students take climate change and environmentalism. They should be commended for this and the actions that schools like Outwoods are doing to play their part.”
