Burton and Uttoxeter’s Member of Parliament, Kate Kniveton, has urged residents to give her petition in opposition to increasing car parking charges one last push ahead of East Staffordshire Borough Council’s Cabinet meeting taking place this evening (Monday 18th December).
The crunch meeting will decide whether the Labour-controlled council will go ahead with the proposed 35% increase in car parking fees locally. In addition to the increase in parking fees, there are also details within the council plans to scrap the popular 'free after 3' parking scheme.
The local MP previously warned the Council about any potential moves to increase parking charges and the harm it would cause to the Borough’s two town centres. Ms Kniveton also stressed that the timing of such a move could not be worse, considering the existing pressures on household finances.
Commenting, Kate Kniveton MP said:
“In October, I urged caution on Labour-run ESBC not to consider an increase in parking charges. A move which would be a major blow for retailers and could not come at a worse time as families juggle increasing pressures on their household finances.
“Sadly, despite these warnings, Labour is determined to push ahead with these plans and are due to discuss them at their Cabinet Meeting tonight. I urge everyone who has not done so already to back my petition and ensure the Council is made aware of our views. We have just a small amount of time left to convince them to rethink this terrible plan.”
