- By sticking to the plan to halve inflation and strengthen the economy, the Conservative Government have been able to put more money in people’s pockets through tax cuts that reward hard work.
- This Budget delivers on the Conservatives’ plan to cut taxes, helping with the cost of living and building a brighter future for people and their families.
Kate Kniveton MP has welcomed the series of measures announced by the Chancellor in the Spring Budget to help residents and businesses across Burton and Uttoxeter.
Today, the Chancellor announced that National Insurance contributions will be cut to eight per cent. Taken together with the cut to National Insurance announced last year, the Conservatives have delivered a tax cut worth a total of £900 a year for the average worker. The Government will also cut National Insurance for the self-employed, delivering a combined tax cut worth £650.
Thanks to Conservative led tax cuts, and to above-inflation increases to tax thresholds since 2010, an average worker in 2024-25 will pay over £1,600 less in personal taxes than they otherwise would have done. Furthermore, by freezing fuel duty for the fourteenth consecutive year since 2010, drivers will be saving more money when they fill up at the pump.
Ahead of the fiscal event, Kate Kniveton, who represents the capital of British brewing, worked with colleagues to urge the Chancellor to help for Burton’s biggest employer and to back the Great British pub sector. The freeze announced to alcohol duty will support the hospitality industry by ensuring the price of a pint and the average bottle of wine is lower, supporting up to 6,385 hospitality venues across West Midlands.
More broadly, by raising the VAT threshold, 28,000 small businesses, including in Burton and Uttoxeter will be taken out of paying the tax. This will allow them to focus on their priorities and grow their business.
Commenting, Kate Kniveton MP said:
“I welcome the measures in today’s Spring Budget from the Chancellor and the support it gives to residents and businesses across Burton and Uttoxeter.
“The further cut in National Insurance, combined with the cut at the Autumn Statement, is a tax cut of over £900 for the average worker – giving the average earner the lowest effective personal tax rate since 1975. This is in addition to the freeze in Fuel Duty - the fourteenth consecutive fuel duty freeze under the Conservatives, helping to save motorists money at the pump.
“For Burton, our brewing industry is key to our economic success and remains the biggest employer for the town. Following calls from myself and colleagues, the Chancellor announced an extension to the freeze in Alcohol Duty, helping pubs and brewers in the capital of British brewing and across the country. Furthermore, the Chancellor’s decision to take thousands of small businesses out of paying VAT by increasing the VAT threshold will help create jobs and grow our economy.
“Whilst, our local Labour-run council here in East Staffordshire is increasing taxes and raising parking charges, hitting working people in the pockets and harming our town centres, the Government has a plan which is growing our economy and delivering for the British people.”
Commenting, Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt MP said:
“Because the Conservatives are sticking to the plan with the economy inflation is down from 11.1 per cent to 4.0 per cent, meaning we can cut taxes and put more money in people’s pockets to grow the economy.
“Our Budget cuts taxes to reward work, supports small businesses and helps more parents with the cost of childcare to grow the economy and fund public services.
“By sticking to the plan, the Conservatives will deliver a stronger economy to build a brighter future. Labour cannot say what they would do with the economy because they do not have a plan and would take us back to square one.”
