Burton and Uttoxeter’s MP, Kate Griffiths, has paid a visit to Atkin Farms in Field, near Uttoxeter ahead of Back British Farming Day 2020. Kate met with Rob Atkin and his team who are working their way through the harvest season to hear about current issues affecting the agricultural sector.
Kate discussed a range of issues including the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and ensuring route to market chains with supermarkets remained as easy as possible at this critical time. Kate also gave the Atkin’s team her full backing for this year’s Back British Farming Day, the fifth annual event of its kind organised by the National Union of Farmers and is a celebration of British agriculture and food production.
Kate said, “It was great to meet with Rob and his team to discuss what has understandably been a very difficult year for farming. Atkin’s Farms like many others across Staffordshire and the country have been feeding the nation through this incredibly difficult period and I wanted to pay them thanks for all their hard work”.
“I will of course be supporting the superb Back British Farming Day 2020 event and will continue to do all I can to stand up for this important local employer and sector of our economy here in Staffordshire”.
Rob said, “It was great to welcome Kate to the farm and to show her the wheat harvest currently taking place. 2020 continues to be a very challenging year for farming, particaurly the arable sector, which has also been affected by extreme weather.”
“The team and I also spoke to Kate about the impact Coronavirus has had on farming and how farmers stepped up to the challenge of feeding the nation during the health pandemic. This coming Wednesday is #BackBritishFarming Day and it was good to hear from Kate that she is supporting this event and will continue to support farmers here locally in Staffordshire.”
