A number of constituents have contacted me in relation to the Agricultural Bill. I fully understand the concerns raised with regard to maintaining our UK standards; be this our food safety, animal welfare or environmental protection. I whole heartedly agree that such standards need to be preserved.
I further understand the fear that farmers may have in wanting this to be solidified in legislation. Let me assure you that upholding the UK’s current high standards are of great importance to the Government.
As has been mentioned, post-Brexit the Government want to be ahead, globally, as far as farm and welfare is concerned. We now have the perfect opportunity to tailor our agricultural policy for the better.
I am also aware that the EU Withdrawal Act transferred all existing EU food safety provisions onto the UK statute book. Therefore, let me reassure you, that Ministers have made clear these standards will not be watered down in pursuit of any trade deal. The Government will do their best to achieve this; be this through NC1 or NC2, or by other means.
Thank you again to all those who have taken the time to email me, should you need any future assistance do let me know.
