Whilst we have Christmas to look forward to, the end of the year is also a time when we reflect on the year that has been and what the future might hold. In Burton, 2022 has been a busy year and, despite the global economic challenges facing the country, there are reasons to be optimistic about 2023. With the continued development of plans to revitalise our town centres, more police officers on Staffordshire streets and further investment in our local NHS, I will continue to deliver on the people of Burton and Uttoxeter’s priorities and level up our local area.
Recently, I was pleased to have convened a public meeting for residents to hear about possible plans for the future of Burton’s National Brewing Collection following the closure of the National Brewery Centre. Representatives came together from Molson Coors Beverage Company, East Staffordshire Borough Council (ESBC) and the National Brewery Heritage Trust (NBHT) to outline their visions for the future of the Collection and how it could play a critical role in the regeneration of our town centre, driving tourism in our part of Staffordshire.
I have said many times throughout this process, whilst no one wanted to see the National Brewery Centre close, if we are ambitious and approach this situation with an open mind, I’m confident we can turn this into a hugely positive opportunity for Burton and create a fitting tribute to our town’s proud brewing history.
I was pleased to hear the warm reception for the ideas put forward by ESBC to residents and community leaders who were in attendance. Both the NBHT and local historians have commented on the excitement they have for this project and, with the assistance of Molson Coors and other brewers, they wish to be able to create a dedicated museum to our town’s heritage and our nation’s history with brewing. Moving the Collection to the Bass House and Town House will bring Burton’s deep connection to its brewing story, back to where it all began.
That is an exciting prospect which I will continue to work on with residents, ESBC, Molson Coors and the NBHT into 2023.
